ACWA Survey Shows Californians Believe Saving Water Is Important, Even in Wet Yearswww.earthtimes.org/articles/press/survey-shows-californians-believe-saving,1327533.html# Earthtimes.org (Press Release) Author : Association of California Water Agencies News Category : PressRelease SACRAMENTO, CA -- 06/02/10 -- With evidence that people believe that the state is short on water and are willing to save, the state's water conservation program -- Save Our Water -- kicked off a new campaign featuring real Californians. The announcement coincided with the release of a new survey which shows that 94% of voters believe that, even with this year's wet weather, the state needs to conserve water. Conducted on behalf of the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA), the survey also showed that 86% of people say that they are willing to make significant changes in their household activities to reduce their water use by 20%. "We are pleased to learn that a majority of Californians recognize the state's ongoing water supply problems and are willing to do their part," said Timothy Quinn, ACWA's executive director. "People also understand that behavior around water use needs to change, rain or shine. While we work on other long-term fixes to the state's water system, conservation is an easy short-term approach to stretch our water supply." The survey also found: * More than four in five voters (81%) see the state's current water shortage as a significant problem, including one quarter (26%) who labeled it as a "crisis." New "Real People, Real Savings" Campaign Kicks Off Created by ACWA and the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) in April 2009, the Save Our Water program is a statewide public education program designed to encourage Californians to make water conservation a habit. This summer, the Save Our Water program is calling on residents to "get real" about water conservation with a new "Real People, Real Savings" campaign. This campaign highlights everyday people who have taken steps to save water inside and outside of their homes. Some people have gone as far as replacing all lawn areas with water-efficient landscaping. Others have purchased water-efficient appliances and fixtures, or simply save water by reusing household water on outdoor plants. "Water conservation is a critical part of stretching our water supplies," said DWR Director Mark Cowin. "Save Our Water is helping educate people about large and small ways we can save water inside and outside our homes." The first five people featured live in the Bay Area and Sacramento. As the program continues, residents of other parts of the state will also be featured. To meet the Save Our Water Real People, visit http://realpeople.saveourh2o.org/.
